King Luke, ad un passo dal trono

Come ti senti fisicamente?

It has been six months since the last time we spoke to Luke, few months after his victory over Stefan Croituru, in a match for the Venator’s middleweight belt. Back then Luke told us that he was all about Venator and was waiting for the next Venator’s event so he could defend his title.

We all know how it went. Venator took a break in order to fix some issues related to poor MMA regulamentations here Italy, but Luke continued to fight, win and train.

Until now. On March 11th he fought and lost against KSW’s middleweight champion, Mamed Khalidov, in ACB 54 in Manchester.

The fight lasted a couple of seconds, Khalidov stunned Luke with an overhand right, then finished him with a combination.

We’ve reached Luke and asked him to talk about the fight and his future.

First of all, how hard does Khalidov hit?

I don’t know, I didn’t feel anything.

You’ve been so close to become the European MMA’s king, but dreams of glory faded in half a minute. What went wrong that night?

It was the perfect mixture for me of opportunity and hard work, I prepared like a world beater, [I was] in phenomenal condition, but the world beat me down in just one punch. Nothing went wrong, I just got hit and fell over.

Recently Khabib Nurmagomedov dropped his fight against Tony Ferguson due to weight cut issues. How do you approach this side of MMA? Do you think cutting a lot of weight affected in any way the fight? Is going up to light heavyweight an option for the future?

I cut a great amount of weight, I always have and people are amazed by it, but for me it’s always just been the price you have to pay to compete, now I can see the problems it’s causing and [I] am deciding whether I should go up to LHW or not. But it’s definitely on the cards in the near future, sometimes finding fights at LHW is the hardest thing about it.

How do you feel physically? When do you think you can fight again?

I feel great, little bump on the nose, so I’m just waiting to recover from the knock out and then I’ll be back in the gym training full time. I imagine end of may-early June would be perfect for me.

You told Ariel Helwani you’d like to fight Rashad Evans for an hypothetical UFC’s return. Do you think there is still there any chance for a call from Dana White?

Of course not. If I had won that fight then it was on the cards, but losing sets me back, I’ll probably need another 4-5 wins or a win over another guy like Khalidov if I can get it. So let’s see what the future holds. It’ll be another 1-2 years, I think.

ACB is one of the top European promotions. Which are the biggest differences between ACB and our Venator? Do you think you’re going to fight for the Russian promotion again?

Venator doesn’t have the same speed and tenacity as ACB who put on shows constantly, they’re back in less than two week with another massive show in Tajikistan. Where as Venator it’s more of a fun and crazy atmosphere where they put on crazy cards and match ups for the fans! I love the guys at Venator and the promotion, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they return in the future. As for fighting now, my doors are open to all options I’m just waiting to see where suits me best but ACB is on the list for sure.

You had a match with Mattia Schiavolin, he’s probably the most well-rounded fighter competing in Italy. Do you think he belongs to promotions you fight for or used to?

Schiavolin is a tough guy and a good person, he was on a tear when I fought him and since that he holds a win over Mayhem Miller so if he still has the desire to compete and train I think he can find some great fights.

Both UFC and Bellator are going to your country. What event are you most looking forward to, Manuwa vs Anderson or MacDonald vs Dailey?

I’m heading down to watch Manuwa get the job done on Saturday, but mainly I’m going to support my friend Arnold Allen who will be turning 3-0 in the UFC this weekend. I think both events have great fights on them but I’m more excited for UFC London because I’m looking forward to Arnold shinning in front of his home crowed.

Did Frank Merenda call you yet for the Venator MW title defense?

I’m always in contact with Frank. Nothing has been put my way yet, but I think they’re struggling to find an opponent worthy of a title shot just yet and are looking to build their roster.

What do you think about Venator going overseas?

Expansion is great for everyone in MMA.

Are we going to see you at next Venator event in Rimini, maybe in the crowd?

I’m extremely busy now with my gym in the south of Spain, as well as my commentary work, but if I can make it I’d love to come and watch the fights.
